Bari, 21 Giugno 2012 - Impresa riuscita. Nella lunga trasferta che ha portato i nero-oro pugliesi ad espugnare Terni, l'unico pensiero che ha monopolizzato l'attenzione dei ragazzi di Bari era la vittoria, il raggiungimento di un obiettivo sognato per tutta la stagione: Arrivare alla Finale della South Conference, migliorando il risultato ottenuto lo scorso anno, allorché furono eliminati dai Crusaders, oggi in Lenaf. L'avversario con il quale i Patriots si son dovuti confrontare stavolta era di quelli tosti. Gli Steelers, generosi, caparbi e mai domi, hanno gettato il cuore oltre l'ostacolo, dando il 110 per cento di quello che era nelle loro possibilità, ma non è bastato. Gli ospiti hanno prevalso grazie al loro più che rodato impianto offensivo, alla loro prestanza fisica e soprattutto grazie ad una determinazione davvero eccezionale. Adesso li aspetta una sfida molto importante, contro i Cardinals e di nuovo in trasferta. I pugliesi non partono col favore dei pronostici ma se sono arrivati fino a questo punto è stato soprattutto grazie alla loro capacità di essere squadra, di essere un gruppo compatto, unito e che ha probabilmente cominciato ad acquisire la giusta mentalità vincente. It was a good win for us yesterday. Coach Bill Sytsma and his staff had the Terni Steelers ready to play. It was a physical contest between to well coached teams. There was a lot of offense, so it was a great game for the fans to watch. I want to congratulate Coach Bill Sytsma and Terni Steelers on their 2012 season. They accomplished some great things winning their division and getting into the playoffs.. The Steelers have a lot to be proud of going into 2013.
E' stata una bella vittoria per noi ieri. Coach Bill Sytsma e il suo staff hanno portato gli Steelers ad essere davvero pronti per questa sfida. E 'stata una gara fisica tra due squadre ben allenate. Both teams fought hard throughout the game. The medical staff was called on to the field many times to treat players from both teams. It was that type of game. Two divisional champions fighting it out to move on. I feel that one factor helped us in the course of the game was our team experience. The Steelers are a very young team experience wise, but they have some real talented players. Teams with experience find a way to win when you are not playing your best football. At times we did not play real well during the game, however we found a way to pull it together and get a win. It was a goal of the team to get passed this level of the playoffs this year because of their lost in the same round to the Crusaders last year.
Entrambe le squadre hanno lottato duramente per tutto l'incontro. Il personale medico è stato chiamato sul campo molte volte per intervenire sui giocatori di entrambe le squadre. E' stato proprio quel genere di partita. Due leader dei loro rispettivi gironi che lottavano per andare avanti. Credo che se esiste un fattore che ci abbia aiutato nel corso del match..questo è stato la nostra esperienza, come team. Gli Steelers sono una squadra molto giovane, ma hanno alcuni giocatori davvero dotati di grande talento. Le squadre esperte riescono a trovare un modo per vincere quando non stanno giocando il loro miglior football. A tratti, non abbiamo giocato bene durante la partita, però abbiamo trovato un modo per farcela, tutti insieme, ed ottenere la vittoria. E' stato davvero un successo di squadra importante aver superato questo turno dei playoff di questa stagione…soprattutto sapendo che lo scorso anno i ragazzi avevano perso le semifinali contro i Crusaders.
La lunga trasferta fino in Umbria non ha assolutamente influito sullo stato di forma dei tuoi ragazzi, che hanno offerto a Terni una prestazione davvero notevole…
When we found out that we were going to Terni, the management of the team and I sat down to formulate a plan of action. It was a team effort by all of us. For what ever reason there were times in the game that we lacked concentration and focus. When it happened, like any good team the Steelers made us pay for it. The thing that I took away from this was that my players were happy that they accomplished their goal to win the game, but they were not happy at all about their performance. We have players on this team that are willing to work hard to correct their mistakes to become better players and that is comforting as a coach. They see the need to get better and not just settle for what they have done. I told them after the game that we all made mistakes including me, that is going to happen, but it how we deal with those mistakes that determines what type of team we will be.
Quando abbiamo saputo che saremmo andati a Terni, io e la dirigenza ci siam messi a sedere e abbiamo studiato un piano d'azione. E' stato un lavoro di squadra da parte di tutti noi. Per un motivo o per un altro, ci sono stati dei momenti all'interno della partita in cui la concentrazione e la messa a fuoco venivano meno. Quando è capitato, così come farebbe ogni buona squadra, gli Steelers ci hanno castigato. La cosa importante che ne è scaturita è che i ragazzi erano sì felici di aver raggiunto l'obiettivo di vincere la partita, ma non erano abbastanza soddisfatti per la loro prestazione. Abbiamo giocatori in questa squadra che sono disposti a lavorare sodo per correggere i propri errori e diventare quindi giocatori migliori e tutto ciò è confortante per un allenatore. Avvertono la necessità di migliorare…e non solo accontentarsi di quello che hanno fatto. Ho detto loro, dopo la partita, che tutti noi abbiamo commesso degli errori, me compreso, e questo ci sta…ma è il modo in cui ci poniamo di fronte a questi sbagli che determina che tipo di squadra saremo.
Gli Steelers quest'anno son stati davvero un osso duro per molte squadre…quale è stata allora la chiave per aver la meglio sui ragazzi guidati da Bill Sytsma?
The Terni Steelers were a well coached tough team. You could see why they were so successful this season. The biggest reason I feel that was a key to our success was our physical play. From the time that I arrived in Bari, I have tried to instill in my players that we are going to be physical in all phases of the game (Offense, Defense & Special Teams). We are going to be physical, we are going to hit you hard, but we are going to hit you clean. There is nothing that makes me more mad is to see players use these soccer style sliding tackles on other players. To me it is very unsafe for the players and the official’s need to need to keep the players safe as the first priority. I will never stoop to the level of coaching my players to us this tactic. In my opinion, it is a BUSH LEAGUE tactic. With it being as hot as it was during the game, I feel that our physical play took a toll on the Steelers. On example was our kick-off return team. Giulio Scardicchio put a hit on a guy so hard that you could hear it echo throughout the hills of Terni. It was a hard hit, but a clean hit and that is how I want my team to play.
Gli Steelers Terni sono una squadra tosta e ben allenata. Si riusciva a capire perfettamente il perché avessero ottenuto ottimi riscontri in questa stagione. Credo che la vera chiave del nostro successo è stato il nostro gioco fisico. Dal momento in cui sono arrivato a Bari, ho cercato di instillare nei miei giocatori il concetto di essere una squadra dall'approccio fisico in tutte le fasi del gioco (Attacco, Difesa e special teams). Dobbiamo essere fisici, colpire duro ma colpire sempre in modo leale. Non c'è niente che mi faccia incavolare di più che vedere i giocatori usare queste scivolate in stile calcistico quando affrontano altri giocatori. Per me è molto pericoloso per i giocatori stessi….e la massima priorità di tutti, arbitri compresi, è quella di salvaguardare la loro incolumità.. Non potrò mai abbassarmi al livello di insegnare ai miei giocatori ad usare questa tattica. A mio parere, è una tattica proprio da categorie inferiori, mediocri. Con quel caldo che c'era..il nostro gioco fisico ha avuto la meglio…e gli Steelers hanno pagato dazio. Un esempio lo abbiamo avuto dal nostro kickoff return team. Giulio Scardicchio ha messo a segno su un avversario un colpo così forte che si è sentito riecheggiare in tutte le colline di Terni. E' stato un colpo duro, ma un colpo pulito ed è così che voglio che giochi la mia squadra.
Vogliamo tirar fuori qualche nome come migliori in campo?…
To me it was a whole team effort that got us this win. I know that it is not the most exciting statement for the press, but that is how we look at things. It is about TEAM and not SELF. It does not matter who gets the credit as long as we win. There were a lot of players that stepped up and filled in for players that were injured throughout the game. Domenico Farella showed a great amount of veteran leadership during the game. Domenico has a great understanding of the game and he is like a coach on the field for me. However the true MVP of the game was Presidente Leonardo Damiani and the management of the Bari Patriots for their support. I am so blessed to have people like that that truly care about the wellbeing of the team. In Bari, it is about "Team Patriots."
Per me è stato il lavoro di squadra che ci ha condotto verso questa vittoria. So che non è proprio una dichiarazione emozionante per la stampa, ma è così che ci piace vedere le cose. E' sempre una questione di squadra e non singoli. Fino a quando vinciamo, non ha importanza stabilire di chi sia il merito. C'erano un sacco di giocatori che che son stati pronti ad entrare in campo al posto degli infortunati lungo tutta la durata dell'incontro. I knew that when I arrived in Bari and started working with the team that if we could play good fundamentally sound football that we could do some special things. Each practice, the players come and are hungry to learn and become better players. I used a game called Tommyball during our preparation for the playoffs to see how they worked together. At the end of practice, we would use Tommyball for conditioning. It was very important to my players to see who would be Tommyball Champions for that practice. With all things considered, I knew that if we played good fundamental football, we had the talent to be where we are right now.
Quando sono arrivato a Bari e ho iniziato a lavorare con la squadra, sapevo che se fossimo riusciti a giocare un football buono ed essenziale…avremmo potuto fare delle cose speciali. In ogni allenamento, i ragazzi hanno sempre un gran desiderio di imparare e di migliorarsi. Ho anche usato un giochino chiamato Tommyball durante la nostra preparazione per i playoff…per vedere come lavoravano insieme. Dicevo ai ragazzi che avremmo giocato a Tommyball al termine dell'allenamento, come conditioning. Il risultato è che loro ci tenevano molto, ogni volta, a vedere chi sarebbe stato Campione di Tommyball per quella sessione. Tutto sommato comunque, ero consapevole del fatto che se avessimo giocato un buon football nei fondamentali, avremmo avuto il talento per essere dove siamo adesso.
Cosa chiederai ai tuoi ragazzi adesso, in vista di questa sfida contro i Cardinals? Con quali presupposti vi avvicinate a questo impegno?
Things do not change with us playing the Palermo Cardinals this week. As Head Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers would say: “The standard is the standard” and that is no different here in Bari with the Patriots. With having a degree in History, I use different things in history to motivate and inspire my players. Last week against Terni, I used the example of King Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae. With my love of history, I know that God will inspire me to find something for my players for this week’s game against Palermo.
Le cose non cambiano per noi questa settimana in vista della partita contro i Cardinals Palermo. Come direbbe l'Head Coach dei Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin: "the standard is the standard" e non è diverso qui a Bari con i Patriots. Avendo una laurea in Storia, io uso episodi diversi della storia per motivare e ispirare i miei giocatori. La scorsa settimana contro Terni, ho usato l'esempio di re Leonida e la battaglia delle Termopili. Con il mio amore per la storia, so che Dio mi spingerà a trovare qualcosa per i miei giocatori anche per la partita di questa settimana contro Palermo.
Cosa sai della squadra palermitana guidata da Manfredi Leone?
It is my understanding that everyone expects the Palermo Cardinals to win the 9 Man Football Championship this season. The Cardinals are a well coached team that has a great tradition of football excellence. With us travelling the ten hour trip to Palermo, it gives the Cardinals a great home field advantage. My team will not be intimidated by tradition or the home field advantage. We will bring our physical style of play to the field of competition. You will have the two best teams in the south battling it out to represent the south conference in the 9 Men Bowl. It will be a great game for the fans.
Mi pare di capire che tutti si aspettano che i Cardinals Palermo vincano il campionato di Football a nove in questa stagione. I Cardinals sono una squadra ben allenata che ha una grande tradizione di eccellenza nel football. Affronteremo un viaggio di 10 ore per arrivare a Palermo…e giocare in casa dà ai Cardinals di certo un grosso vantaggio. La mia squadra però non si farà intimidire dalla tradizione dei palermitani o dal vantaggio del proprio terreno di gioco. Metteremo in campo il nostro stile di gioco fisico. Avrete le due migliori squadre del sud che si daranno battaglia per rappresentare la South Conference al NineBowl. Sarà una grande partita per i tifosi.

Again, I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the opportunity to be here in Bari with a great group of people. They have been a great blessing to me. I would like to thank my loving wife Kathryn back home in Florida. I have been coaching away from home for the past 10 years and she calls before and after every game from Florida. Kathryn is my biggest supporter and my number one fan. I could not do what I do without God and Kathryn. Lastly, I would like to thank Coach Tom Lewis, Coach J. Ho anche usato un giochino chiamato Tommyball durante la nostra preparazione per i playoff…per vedere come lavoravano insieme. Dicevo ai ragazzi che avremmo giocato a Tommyball al termine dell'allenamento, come conditioning. Il risultato è che loro ci tenevano molto, ogni volta, a vedere chi sarebbe stato Campione di Tommyball per quella sessione. Tutto sommato comunque, ero consapevole del fatto che se avessimo giocato un buon football nei fondamentali, avremmo avuto il talento per essere dove siamo adesso.
Cosa chiederai ai tuoi ragazzi adesso, in vista di questa sfida contro i Cardinals? Con quali presupposti vi avvicinate a questo impegno?
Things do not change with us playing the Palermo Cardinals this week. As Head Coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers would say: “The standard is the standard” and that is no different here in Bari with the Patriots. With having a degree in History, I use different things in history to motivate and inspire my players. Last week against Terni, I used the example of King Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae. With my love of history, I know that God will inspire me to find something for my players for this week’s game against Palermo.
Le cose non cambiano per noi questa settimana in vista della partita contro i Cardinals Palermo. Come direbbe l'Head Coach dei Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin: "the standard is the standard" e non è diverso qui a Bari con i Patriots. Avendo una laurea in Storia, io uso episodi diversi della storia per motivare e ispirare i miei giocatori. La scorsa settimana contro Terni, ho usato l'esempio di re Leonida e la battaglia delle Termopili. Con il mio amore per la storia, so che Dio mi spingerà a trovare qualcosa per i miei giocatori anche per la partita di questa settimana contro Palermo.
Cosa sai della squadra palermitana guidata da Manfredi Leone?
It is my understanding that everyone expects the Palermo Cardinals to win the 9 Man Football Championship this season. The Cardinals are a well coached team that has a great tradition of football excellence. With us travelling the ten hour trip to Palermo, it gives the Cardinals a great home field advantage. My team will not be intimidated by tradition or the home field advantage. We will bring our physical style of play to the field of competition. You will have the two best teams in the south battling it out to represent the south conference in the 9 Men Bowl. It will be a great game for the fans.
Mi pare di capire che tutti si aspettano che i Cardinals Palermo vincano il campionato di Football a nove in questa stagione. I Cardinals sono una squadra ben allenata che ha una grande tradizione di eccellenza nel football. Affronteremo un viaggio di 10 ore per arrivare a Palermo…e giocare in casa dà ai Cardinals di certo un grosso vantaggio. La mia squadra però non si farà intimidire dalla tradizione dei palermitani o dal vantaggio del proprio terreno di gioco. Metteremo in campo il nostro stile di gioco fisico. Avrete le due migliori squadre del sud che si daranno battaglia per rappresentare la South Conference al NineBowl. Sarà una grande partita per i tifosi.

Again, I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the opportunity to be here in Bari with a great group of people. They have been a great blessing to me. I would like to thank my loving wife Kathryn back home in Florida. I have been coaching away from home for the past 10 years and she calls before and after every game from Florida. Kathryn is my biggest supporter and my number one fan. I could not do what I do without God and Kathryn. Lastly, I would like to thank Coach Tom Lewis, Coach J. David Miller and the players of the SoCal Coyotes from Yucca Valley California. This season, the two teams have become very close with each other. As a sign of support, both teams have the national flag of each others country on the back of their helmets. We are so grateful and humbled for the caring support of our SoCal brothers from California.
